The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Riceboro Dollar General Store at 4507 South Coastal Highway. The ceremony takes place at 11 a.m.

The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce will host a Progress Through People luncheon at noon on Thursday, October 13 at the Liberty County Performing Arts Center located at 2140 E. Oglethorpe Hwy in Flemington. The luncheon will feature Tina Lilly, Executive Director of the Georgia Council for the Arts. She will discuss ways to develop Georgian communities through the arts. The Liberty County Chamber would like to thank the Convention & Visitors Bureau for sponsoring the luncheon.

The Liberty County Health Department and Liberty Regional Medical Center are teaming up to host two screening events during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Health Department will be offering free clinical breast exams — by appointment — from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 for women who meet certain eligibility criteria. After an initial screening at the health department, women can then go directly to Liberty Regional for a mammogram. Women who meet certain annual income guidelines and who are between the ages of 40 and 64 without insurance will be eligible to receive a screening mammogram at no cost under the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program ( BCCP). The BCCP provides access to breast and cervical cancer screening for women who would otherwise not be able to afford these services. The annual Pumpkin Patch Festival will take place on October 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Bryant Commons Park. The ITPA Telephone Museum will be open. The local Shrine Club will be selling pumpkins. There will also be a variety of free games and activities for families.

Digging for diamonds

Finding diamonds at Thomas Hill Jewelers. Thomas Hill donated 10,000 cases of diamonds and gemstones to be excavated in a sandbox. Participants will fill a bucket with sand and travel to the store’s various sifting stations where the gems will be identified. The event will benefit United Way’s Backpack Buddy program which helps children in need receive food. The event will take place at Thomas Hill Jewelers at 115 East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Hinesville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Limited tickets available. Annual downtown scarecrow ride along Main Street. The ride or treat will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The evening will continue with a block party from 8-11 p.m. with music from the Victory Drive Band and several food vendors. The HDDA will also air the movie “Hocus Pocus” at 8 p.m.

Community of Service Gala Banquet
