Stage Left Obtains State Grant for Community Events | News, Sports, Jobs

LISBON — The Stage Left Community Arts Center will produce two community storytelling events in Lisbon, Ohio, after receiving a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.

In late 2021, the Ohio Art Council awarded the Stage Left Community Arts Center a $14,000 project grant to present SPARK Storytelling, a series of storytelling workshops featuring local and visiting artists culminating in two showcases live community events in the summer and fall of 2022.

Each themed storytelling event will feature 10-15 community storytellers coached by a team of professionals in five virtual storytelling workshops. The community is then invited to watch the storytellers live, on stage, interpret their stories alongside a guest professional storyteller.

The first theme is “at home, or something like that.”

“We are so grateful to the Ohio Arts Council for recognizing the value of stories in our community. Stage Left has brought so many stories to life over the past thirty years, adding live storytelling events to our season just feels natural,” said artistic director Kandace Cleland. “It took years for Stage Left to find a permanent home at Trinity Playhouse, so choosing ‘home’ as our first theme not only pays homage to our journey, but also shines a light on our part of the world. It’s time to tell the real stories of the community that welcomed us.

SPARK begins accepting submissions March 1, 2022. For more information, visit www.stageleftplayers.org/spark.

SPARK’s mission is to build community by telling personal stories that excite, entertain, touch, teach and transmit the unique culture of the Rust Belt, Ohio River Valley and Upper Appalachia.
