GOATS, Belgium – Leaders of the US Army Garrison Benelux honored volunteers from the Tri-Border Community at the annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony June 6 in Schinnen, The Netherlands. The community includes personnel stationed in Schinnen and Joint Force Command Brunssum, the Netherlands.

Volunteers dedicated time to serve and support the community through activities such as events for children and youth, family preparation groups, and community recreational events.

“We thank you and admire you for all you have done for the community,” said Army Col. Sean Hunt Kuester, USAG Benelux Garrison Commander.

The 2019 Volunteer of the Year winners are.

Young Volunteer of the Year: Adison Lenz.

Adison Lenz has volunteered at the Alliance Players Community Theater and AFNORTH International School helping teachers. She was the vice-president of the first year class as well as an ambassador for middle and high school students.

Civilian Volunteer of the Year: Therese Guza.

Therese Guza has served countless hours for community thrift stores. She supervised other thrift store volunteers, created schedules, and made sure volunteers were enrolled and recorded their hours in the Volunteer Management Information System.

Volunteer Family of the Year: The Lenz Family.

The Lenz family collectively served approximately 2,000 hours in the Tri-Border community. The Lenz family were actively involved in the community and volunteered for several organizations.

Volunteer Organization of the Year (tied): The Alliance Players Community Theater and Thrift Store.

The Alliance Players Community Theater was started in 1975. The theater is run solely by community volunteers and provides quality and affordable theatrical entertainment to the Tri-Border community. The Alliance Players Community Theater is a place where community volunteers can explore and grow in the theatrical arts.

The thrift store received donations of goods, inventoried, organized, appraised and prepared that community members could purchase at affordable prices. In 2018, $ 6,150 in products from the Thrift Store and various fundraisers was deposited into the American Spouses Club wellness account.

Service Member of the Year (Tied): Staff Sgt. Julio Diaz and Staff Sgt. Kavezhon houses.

The army sergeant major. Julio Diaz has dedicated his time to improving the overall health and well-being of community members. In 2018, Diaz volunteered 800 hours.

The army sergeant major. Kavanthon Homes has coached and mentored children in sports. He taught them the importance of being a team player and showing good sportsmanship.

General Volunteer of the Year Award: Janet Ann Lenz.

Janet Ann Lenz has been involved in several organizations and played an important role in each. She organized, planned and coordinated volunteer support for various parenting organization events, community fundraisers and the Geilenkirchen haunted house during Halloween. She was also the co-host of Tri-Border Girl Scout.

In 2018, volunteers from the tri-border community served a total of 61,925 hours. This equates to $ 1,548,125.
